Andy Warhol Biographical Information:Andy Warhol (1928-1987) started his career as a commercial artist working for various magazines such as Vogue and commercial ad agencies. In 1952 the Hugo Gallery in New York hosted his first solo exhibition and four years later his work was part of a group exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. During the sixties Warhol created many of his most recognizable works including the Campbell Soup themed paintings and the Marilyn Monroes. Warhol also made several films during this period. In 1968 Andy Warhol was shot by Valerie Solanis, the sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men). He survived, but never fully recovered from his injuries. This event marks a turning point in his career. Warhol changed his focus to painting commissioned portraits of celebrities. His other activities also became more entrepreneurial to the point where he even started a nightclub and hosted TV shows on MTV. Warhol died in 1987 from complications after gall bladder surgery. |
