Georges Braque Biographical Information:Georges Braque (1882-1963) first began to hone his painting skills while working for his father, a house decorator. Eventually, he moved to Paris to study under a master decorator and earned his craftsman certificate. While in Paris, he discovered the work Matisse, Derain, and Dufy, and began developing his own career as a painter. Meeting Picasso in 1909 had a strong influence on Braque’s style. Braque and Picasso developed Cubism together until Braque was called up to serve int he first world war.
After he recovered from war injuries he received in 1917, Braque’s work became freer and less schematic, and he would follow this style for the rest of his life. His large compositions incorporated the Cubist aim of representing the world as seen from a number of different viewpoints. He wanted to convey a feeling of being able to move around within the painting.
