Paul Gauguin Biographical Information:Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) started his professional life as a sailor in the merchant marine. After six years at sea he moved to Paris and embarked on a successful career as a banker and stock broker. He had five children with his wife Mette Gad and generally enjoyed the bourgois lifestyle his high income made possible. His interest in art began as a collector of paintings by Monet, Renoir and others, and he quickly took up painting as a hobby. In 1883 Gauguin decided to give up is affluent lifestyle, cut ties with his family, move to the country, and become a full-time painter. For the rest of his life, Gauguin was an itinerant painter, in France, Panama, Martinique and Tahiti. For a few months in 1888 he worked with van Gogh in Arles, France. This collaboration ended with van Gogh's nervous breakdown. Gauguin's later work was heavily influenced by his experiences on Tahiti, where he spent most of the last 12 years of his life and died in poverty. His style remains unique to this day.
