Henri Matisse Biographical Information:Henri Matisse (1869-1954) started his career as a lawyer. He only became interested in painting during the slow recovery from a serious illness in 1890. It took another two years for him to quite his job and devote all of his time to painting. He studied at the Adademie Julian and later at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. During the next 15 years he evolved as a painter and by 1905 he had settled on the style he is famous for today. His most admired work marking the arrival of his very recognizable style was ‘The Joy of Life.’ Matisse was well respected amongst other artists as well as collectors. Picasso famously remarked, “All things considered, there is only Matisse.” He divided his time between Paris and Nice in the south of France. Besides painting, his interests included sculpture, lithographs, murals for the Barnes Foundation, which now owns ‘The Joy of Life,’ and paper cutouts. Matisse underwent cancer surgery in 1941, which limited his ability to paint. For the remaining years of his life he instead focused on paper cutouts, a technique he had pioneered earlier. Matisse died in 1954, in Nice, having left his mark on modern art. |
