Marc Chagall Biographical Information:Marc Chagall’s (1887-1985) original name was Moische Segal. He lived through the Russian Revolution, two World Wars as well as the emergence of cubism, surrealism, expressionism, and many other art movements.
Although Chagall is mainly famous for his paintings and stained glass windows, he worked on stage sets and costumes for countless plays and operas throughout his career. Examples range from productions of some of Gogol’s plays that were performed in Moscow in 1920 to a performance of the Magic Flute at the metropolitan Opera in New York in 1965.
In 1922 at the age of 34 Chagall completed an autobiography entitled ‘My Life.’ With hindsight this may have been somewhat premature since he lived for another 63 turbulent and productive years.
