Rene Magritte Biographical Information:Rene Magritte (1898-1967) attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels starting in 1916. He experimented with a variety of styles ranging from Italian Futurism to Cubism. After a brief stint in the military, he married Georgette Berger in 1922 and began working as graphic artist, mainly on wallpaper designs. Magritte’s style continued to coalesce as be became involved with the Dadaist movement. In 1927 the couple moved to Paris after Magritte’s first poorly received solo show in Brussels. Many of the Surrealists living in Paris at the time influenced Magritte's style. Max Ernst and Dali became his close friends. Magritte’s style solidified during his early years in Paris and remained essentially unchanged until the end of his life. In the late 40’s Magritte experimented with alternative painting styles, but returned quickly to his original approach after a 1948 exhibition where the public responded poorly to his experiments. In the 50’s Magritte received a commission to paint two murals for the casino in Knokke-le-Zu and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Charleroi. Magritte died in 1967. |
