Twyla Tharp Biographical Information:Twyla Tharp (1941- ) is an innovative choreographer and dancer. After obtaining a degree in Art History, she joined the Paul Taylor Dance Company in 1963. Two year later she started her own group consisting of five women. The first few years were difficult, but her 1971 piece The Fugue grabbed both the audience’s and the critic’s attention and invitations to major dance festivals soon followed. In 1979 Tharp choreographed the film version of Hair followed by the 1981 production of The Catherine Wheel, her first full-length dance production. She also worked on the choreography for the movies Ragtime, Amadeus, and White Nights. Her work won several Emmy awards and she was the recipient of a McArthur Fellowship (aka Genius Grant) in 1992. |
