Vincent van Gogh Biographical Information:For Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), art was both his first and his third career. He started his working life as an art dealer with the firm Goupil & Cie. After seven years in the career, van Gogh became dissatisfied and moved to England, initially to become a teacher. For a few years he worked as a lay preacher until he moved to Amsterdam to study theology at the university.
In 1880, after one year of working as a preacher, he decided to become an artist and started a program of systematic self-instruction to acquire the necessary skills. Initially his goal was to become a commercial illustrator, but before long he discovered his own unique style of painting that had little in common with the commercial side of the business. During the ten short years from 1880 to his in death 1890 van Gogh created all the wonderful paintings for which he is famous today.
